After a video surfaced on the internet by an apparent Al Qaeda member who threatened to attack Germany shortly after this months elections, the German government has boosted its terrorism alert level. "The federal elections offer a special [opportunity] for propaganda and operative activity by terror groups," the German Interior Ministry said, according to a report from CNN. "A new video posted on September 18 by al Qaeda underlines this. The security services have therefore increased the threat level, which leads to increased security measures especially at airports and railway stations."
The ministry noted that there has been an increase in the amount of threats to the country--who is part of the coalition fighting in Afghanistan--by "al Qaeda and other Islamist groups", this year.
According to the report, the speaker on the video identified himself as Bekay Harrach, and used the pseudonym Abu Talha. He implied that if the upcoming elections do not vote into power parties that pledge to pull German troops out of Afghanistan, they would attack within two weeks. Speaking in German, he warned Muslims to stay away from public places during the first two weeks after the September, 27th elections. "If the German people vote for peace, then the Mujahedeen will choose peace with Germany as well. And with the withdrawal of the last German soldier from Afghanistan, the last Mujahed will also leave Germany. Al Qaeda gives you their word." he said. "In a democracy, only the people can order their soldiers to come home. But if the German people decide to continue this war, then it has sealed its own fate and, on top of that, it will have demonstrated that in a democracy civilians are not innocent after all", he concluded.
